About the Northern Sydney Sexual Assault Service

The following services are provided:

  • After-hours crisis service for victims of recent sexual assault
  • Confidential counselling immediately after an assault, and in the following weeks and months
  • Support and information for partners, family and friends
  • Forensic medical examinations to gather evidence for police investigations (ideally within the first 72 hours following an assault)
  • Follow-up medical treatment in regard to possible pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections
  • Information about reporting to the police and the legal process
  • Information about victim's compensation
  • Preparation and support for court
  • Therapeutic groups for adult victims of sexual assault, and for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.
The after-hours crisis service is available for people aged 14 years and over who have been recently sexually assaulted, and would like to see a doctor and a counsellor.

The follow-up counselling and medical service is available for adults (men and women, 16 years and over) who have been sexually assaulted recently.  If you have experienced sexual assault many years ago, please contact the Sexual Assault Service to discuss counselling options.

The service is also available to friends and relatives of sexual assault victims.

There are two Sexual Assault Services in the Northern Sydney Central Coast Area Health Service. These are based at the Royal North Shore Hospital (9926 7111), and Gosford Hospital (4320 2111). If in doubt please phone your local hospital and check which Sexual Assault Service covers your area.
